The resort near Costa Smeralda, chosen by international athletes and clubs, is also ideal for sports-themed company events.
A packed calendar for 2009 for Meliá Olbia, the 4-star superior resort of Spanish chain Sol Meliá, situated on the north-east coast of Sardinia at the centre of Geovillage, the sport & wellness resort set in 24 hectares of Mediterranean shrub.
“The Geovillage is now an international benchmark for sports people from a wide range of disciplines, and as a result has been chosen to host numerous leading events this year”, explains Rafael Torres, general manager of Meliá Olbia. “In February, the resort welcomed the international cycle race “Giro della Sardegna”, in which Italian and European athletes took part, and in May it will be the headquarters of the 2009 Sardinia Rally. It will also be a stop on the World Rally Championship and a pre-championship retreat for the English and Swedish national swimming teams”.
The Calcio Sardegna football tournament, which brings together Europe’s main youth teams, will also be held within the resort, as will the Italian Taekwondo Championship.
The jewels in the resort’s crown include the football centre, recently completed with an 11-a-side pitch, the swimming centre, which has a heated outdoor 50-metre Olympic pool and two indoor pools of 20 and 25 metres each, the tennis centre, with clay and green-set courts, a well-equipped fitness centre, and Geopalace, a venue that can accommodate up to 4,000 spectators for any sports event.
