Hotel chains in Italy: occupancy rate decreases, but average revenue per room rises

AICA, the Italian Association of Hotel Chains that groups national and international players, has presented figures for 2007 and its forecasts for 2008.

Last year, the room occupancy rate fell by 1.4% overall, from 64.6% in 2006 to 63.7%. This drop was sharper in the first few months of the year, and was partly offset by the strong performance of the summer. It was particularly apparent in 4- and 5-star hotels.

The average revenue per occupied room rose however (+1.72%), with the average price per room coming in at EUR 137.59, while the RevPar (average revenue per available room) was EUR 87.59, up 0.3% on 2006.

For 2008, Aica forecasts a room occupancy rate of 63.3%, slightly down on 2007, especially in the first quarter of the year. According to estimates, RevPar is also set to ease off somewhat, falling 0.7% compared to last year.
