The Naples science information complex, housed in a former industrial plant, has installed multiple-connection wi-fi to valorize its state-of-the-art events space

Città della Scienza, the Naples science information complex, is already offering leading-edge technical services and has now added wi-fi throughout its premises, indoor and out, enabling up to 500 users to connect at the same time. “We did a trial run of the new system in June, during the international EDEN, European Distance Education Network, conference,” says Salvatore Cerbone, director of Città della Scienza’s Spazio Eventi events space. “The 400 participants, who came from all over the world, were able to hook up simultaneously in all of our spaces”.
This most recent upgrade of technology was almost inevitable for a complex totally dedicated to communicating scientific knowledge and technological innovation. In point of fact, the Città della Scienza is the home of the Science Centre, Italy’s first new generation interactive scientific museum, designed around interactive pathways and including an exhibition area, teaching laboratories, areas for temporary displays, not to mention the BIC (Business and Innovation Centre) with an “incubator” for new enterprises specialising in information and communication technologies, and a specialist training centre.
The Spazio Eventi opened in 2001: this events venue comprises 6,000sqm split into different types of sections: five conference rooms to seat from 100 to 820; six multifunctional rooms; an exhibition gallery; an outdoor amphitheatre seating 1,000, as well as a series of “piazzas” that can host all sorts of events.
“The Spazio Eventi can organise the entire event, including the catering service and post-conference activities, like tours of Naples and dinner in typical restaurants,” explains Cerbone. The most recently hosted events include the launch of the new Yamaha scooter, with cocktails served in amongst the Science Centre’s exhibits, and the AGEA (the agriculture funding agency) conference involving farming policy representatives from the EU’s 27 member states.
